Keith Colbert led five Virginia Tech players in double figures with 20 points and 6-foot-11 center Roy Brow blocked eight shots as the Hokies routed American, 95-67, in the consolation game of the Miller Classic.

In the championship, South Florida defeated Miami of Ohio, 76-63.

Brow scored 11 points and 6-9 Bobby Beecher had 15 points and 17 rebounds for Tech (9-2).

American (5-3) broke several tournament records: most steals in one game (15) and tournament (23) and most rebounds in one game (46) and tournament (88). Frank Ross, who was named to the all-tournament team, had the most field-goal attempts in one game (27).

Ross almost singlehandedly kept American in the game with 16 points in the first half. He injured his ankle on a jumper that gave the Eagles a 31-30 lead and, by the time he was taped up and back in the game, Tech led, 38-33. Augusta (Ga.) Classic: Howard, aided by a full-court press, recovered from a 15-point first half to defeat Augusta, 70-62, in the championship.

Bill Stuart scored 14 points and Mike Hampton had 13 points for the Bison (4-5). The Jaguars are 4-7.

Howard trailed, 24-9, with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, then switched from a zone to a trapping, pressing defense and narrowed the deficit to 37-30 by halftime. Mont.-Rockville Christmas Tournament: Carl Hodge scored 28 points and tournament MVP Dwayne Milam had 22 as Montgomery-Takoma Park (7-2) defeated Catonsville, 89-79, to win the championship. John Preston scored 34 points for Catonsville (3-5).

In the consolation, Lorenzo Gill scored 25 of a game-high 38 points in the second half to lead Rockville (4-4) over Essex, 85-73. Essex is 2-7.
