Freshman quarterback Chip Ferguson passed for 338 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another touchdown tonight to lead No. 18 Florida State to a 34-23 victory over No. 19 Oklahoma State in the Gator Bowl.

Tony Smith rushed for 201 yards on 24 carries for the Seminoles (9-3). All-America Oklahoma State tailback Thurman Thomas gained 97 yards on 26 carries.

Ferguson threw touchdown passes of 19 and 39 yards to Herb Gainer and ran one yard for a score in the fourth quarter. Cletis Jones scored on a three-yard run for the Seminoles and Derek Schmidt kicked field goals of 23 and 39 yards.

Gainer had seven receptions for 148 yards and the two scores.

Oklahoma State (8-4) closed out the season with three straight losses. The Cowboys, behind, 13-0, at the half, rallied with 17 third-quarter points to make it 27-17 after three quarters and appeared to have the momentum after blocking Schmidt's field goal attempt on the first play of the fourth quarter.

But the Seminoles forced Oklahoma State to punt and then drove 55 yards in nine plays, with Ferguson going over from the one to make the score 34-17 with 10:43 left in the game.

Oklahoma State scored on a 33-yard field goal by Joey O'Donnell, a 29-yard screen pass from quarterback Ronnie Williams to Thomas and a 12-yard halfback pass from Thomas to Williams. Williams hit Hart Lee Dykes with a 31-yard scoring pass with 10 seconds left in the game, but the two-point attempt failed.

Williams finished the game 21 for 43 for 232 yards for two touchdowns, with two interceptions.
