Denis Potvin set the National Hockey League record for career goals by a defenseman and rookie Mikko Makela scored two goals and assisted on three, including Potvin's historic effort, as the New York Islanders routed the Toronto Maple Leafs, 9-2, last night in Uniondale, N.Y.
Brent Sutter scored twice and had two assists and his brother, Duane, had a goal and four assists as the Islanders extended their unbeaten streak to four games and handed the Maple Leafs their seventh straight loss. Bryan Trottier added a pair of goals for New York, giving him 27 for the season.
Makela's first assist of the night helped set up Potvin's 271st career goal in the second period as the Islanders captain broke Bobby Orr's career record. Earlier this season, Potvin broke Orr's record of 915 points by a defenseman.
Potvin's goal came on a 40-foot slap shot from the left faceoff circle and gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead. It was his 13th goal of the season. Flyers 2, Penguins 2
In Pittsburgh, Dave Poulin scored 2:31 into the third period to give Philadelphia the tie. The decision ended the Penguins' seven-game losing streak against Patrick Division teams. The tie also marked the Flyers' first in 78 games.
