John Yurchak scored 22 points and Buddy Hawley had 21 as Mary Washington came back from a second-half deficit tonight to end Catholic's 14-game basketball winning streak with an 81-77 victory.
Mary Washington improved to 16-8; Catholic dropped to 16-7, despite 30 points and seven rebounds from guard John Winkler.
The Cardinals led by 40-38 at halftime and extended their margin to 65-61 midway through the second half with the help of Winkler's outside shooting and drives to the basket.
But several Catholic turnovers kept the Blue Wave in contention, and Hawley's layup with 2 1/2 minutes remaining gave Mary Washington the lead at 75-74.
The Cardinals missed a jump shot on their next possession, the Blue Wave rebounded and Hawley made another inside shot to extend the lead to three. Catholic never got closer.
Catholic Coach Jack Bruen said, "The kids played hard, but Mary Washington did it when they had to do it. But this team's got a lot of character. They'll be back."
The Blue Wave benefited from strong free throw shooting throughout, making 21 of 37 from the line; Catholic shot 15 for 23.

Mike Stultz scored 17 points and David Hamilton had 15 points and five assists as Gallaudet extended a 10-point halftime margin against its Pennsylvania guests.
The Bison, using a full-court press to pull away, improved to 12-11. Tom Tague led the Nike (10-11) with 13 points.
