Phil Sykes scored two goals, one while the visiting Los Angeles Kings were short-handed, to lead them past the Quebec Nordiques, 5-4, last night.

Sykes' second goal, at 9:27 of the third period with teammate Bryan Erickson serving a hooking penalty, gave the Kings a 5-3 lead. Erickson was still off the ice 19 seconds later when Dale Hunter's second goal of the night pulled the Nordiques within a goal. Blues 5, Red Wings 0

Rick Wamsley stopped 26 shots as he recorded his first shutout with St. Louis, and Doug Gilmour scored two goals in beating visiting Detroit.

The Blues took a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Gilmour and Eddy Beers, then scored three goals in 2:09 of the third period.

Kent Carlson passed to Rick Meagher, and Meagher bounced it in off the post at 4:07. Gilmour stole the puck and scored an unassisted goal 1:33 later. Whalers 5, Canucks 4

Rookie Dean Evason scored with 10:07 left to lift Hartford to a home victory over Vancouver. It was the first victory for the Whalers since Jan. 25, ending a 10-game slump.

It was the sixth straight game without a victory for the Canucks, who have five road victories all season. Flames 7, Bruins 4

In Calgary, Alberta, Dan Quinn and Steve Konroyd scored 25 seconds apart to ignite a four-goal third period and Calgary over Boston.

With the score tied, 3-3, Quinn took the puck off the end boards and jammed it behind Boston goalie Doug Keans at 1:13. Konroyd scored 25 seconds later.
