The wife of former football star Kenny Stabler said "Kenny and I are doing fine" despite a night of domestic turmoil that ended up on Birmingham police blotters before his induction into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

"The events sound exaggerated," said Rose Stabler in a telephone interview. "The problem was as much my fault as my husband's."

Police said Stabler's wife called at 10:03 p.m. Friday from a downtown phone booth and reported the ex-quarterback hit her with his fists, kicked her and pushed her out of a moving car. One officer said Rose Stabler, 27, seemed not seriously hurt and was taken to a hotel, "just real upset."

But, at 11:15 the same night, police responded to another call. The report that time stated: "He Stabler grabbed his wife out of the bathtub and pulled her to bed, where he beat her," leaving a bruise and "an eye swollen shut."

The next night, they appeared together as a team at the hall of fame ceremonies . . .

The Washington Redskins will play four preseason games next fall: Atlanta and Pittsburgh in RFK Stadium, New England and Tampa Bay away. Coverage will be by WTTG-TV-5 unless a game is picked up for network airing.
