PeeWee Barber ended Virginia Tech's premature celebration by banking in a 25-foot prayer shot at the buzzer to give Florida State a 77-76 upset in the first round of the Metro Conference basketball tournament in Louisville last night.
Today, Florida State (12-16) will play Memphis State, which beat South Carolina, 100-59. In today's other semifinal, Louisville will play Cincinnati, which beat Southern Mississippi, 75-74.
Florida State trailed by 10 but Barber got 16 of his 22 points in the second half, giving his team a 75-74 lead on 10-footer. Dell Curry's layup put Virginia Tech ahead with six seconds left, starting the celebration.
Cincinnati won on Tony Wilson's two foul shots with nine seconds left.
*Southeastern Conference: Kentucky overcame a five-point deficit with four minutes left by scoring eight straight points and went on to beat LSU, 61-58, in Lexington, Ky. The Wildcats will play Alabama, which beat Mississippi State, 77-65.
*Big Eight: In Kansas City, Mo., Tim McCalister stole a pass and seconds later David Johnson made a layup that helped Oklahoma beat Missouri, 78-75, in a first-round game.
Lynn Hardy's basket had provided Missouri a 75-72 lead. Johnson's two foul shots made it a one-point game, then Anthony Bowie tipped the ball to McCalister in the last seconds. After Johnson's basket, the Sooners clinched it when Linwood Davis stole an inbounds pass and McCalister made two foul shots.
Oklahoma (25-7) will play Kansas today. Kansas beat Kansas State, 74-51. Nebraska will play Iowa State in the other semifinal. Nebraska beat Oklahoma State, 82-75, and Iowa State beat Colorado, 78-60.
*Southwest Conference: In Dallas, DeWayne Chism's fluke three-point play with 18 seconds left helped underdog Texas Tech beat SMU, 45-40, in a quarterfinal. The Red Raiders (15-13 overall) will play TCU in a semifinal today. TCU (21-7) beat Rice, 78-59. Today, Texas A&M, which beat Arkansas, 67-51, will play Texas, which beat Houston, 78-62.
SMU rallied from an eight-point deficit to tie its game at 40 with 33 seconds to go. Chism was fouled by Terry Thomas, who inadvertently tipped the ball into the basket, too, giving Chism a three-point play.
*Pacific Coast Athletic Conference: Anthony Jones' 25 points helped Nevada-Las Vegas beat Fullerton State, 75-65, in a semifinal game in Las Vegas. The Runnin' Rebels will play New Mexico State, which beat Pacific, 75-61.
*ECAC Metro: Jaime Latney scored 25 points in Pittsburgh to help Fairleigh Dickinson beat Wagner, 81-77, and move into the ECAC Metro final against Marist, which beat Robert Morris, 60-55.
*Western Athletic Conference: In Laramie, Wyo., Quintan Gates' 22 points put Texas-El Paso past San Diego State, 78-76, and into the final against Wyoming, which beat New Mexico, 56-54.
