Stan Morrison will not coach basketball at Southern Cal next season. But whether he resigned or was fired remains a question.
Morrison, whose 1985-86 team was built around four freshmen and went from Pacific-10 cochampion to last place in one year, announced his resignation. His record was 103-95 in seven years as head coach, including this year's 11-17 overall and 5-13 Pac-10 record. He will remain as an associate athletic director.
"Given the awkwardness of this past season and given some perceptions that I could do nothing about, I think . . . we he and Athletic Director Mike McGee agreed this was the best time . . . . I prefer not to comment about whether he was fired ."
Among those considered possible successors are Boyd Grant, who resigned at Fresno State Monday, Cal-Irvine's Bill Mulligan and Boston College's Gary Williams. . . .
Lamar Coach Pat Foster, whose team plays George Mason in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament tonight, says he is not a candidate to replace Guy Lewis as Houston's basketball coach. Other possible candidates are Pepperdine's Jim Harrick, Stanford's Tom Davis and Oklahoma's Billy Tubbs.
