Four horseplayers -- including Washington Post racing columnist Andrew Beyer -- each collected $46,463 today when Breathless Wind, a 7-to-2 chance ridden by Alberto Delgado, won the $17,000 Summer Guest Purse to complete a 6-9-7-6-4-1 Pick Six combination.
"This one was not too tough -- there were some solid picks and only one or two esoteric plays needed to get the money," Beyer said. "If that foul claim went our way in the seventh race , we probably would have gotten the whole $200,000-plus pool."
Last year, Beyer was one of two players who collected $50,000 each for selecting the double triple combination at Laurel.
Breathless Wind, breaking from the outside post position, took the lead after a quarter-mile and extended it to four lengths entering the stretch. She held well to defeat Amerricoinrest by two lengths, running the six furlongs in 1:12 1/5. No No Basquette was another five lengths back.
Meanwhile, apprentice jockey Allen Stacy was suspended seven days for a foul while astride Put In Park in Thursday's seventh race. Stacy is leading the jockey colony with 36 winners, which places him among the top riders in the national standings.
