Houston Astros -- Exploratory arthroscopy showed OF Jose Cruz has a sprained ligament, no cartilage damage, in his swollen right knee and the club hopes he can play within two weeks. OF Duane Walker signed a minor league contract.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Put 1B Cecil Cooper, who had surgery on his left elbow in December, on 15-day DL.

Cincinnati Reds -- Asked RHP Frank Pastore, coming off elbow surgery, to take assignment to Class AAA Denver or accept his release.

Chicago White Sox -- Assigned RHP Steve McCatty, RHP Dave Wehrmeister, LHP Jerry Don Gleaton and 1B Joe De Sa to AAA.

New York Mets -- Sent IF Ron Gardenhire, RHP Doug Sisk to minors.

St. Louis Cardinals -- RHP Jeff Lahti came up with shoulder pain, flies north today for examination.

NCAA Championships -- Junior Matt Biondi of California posted U.S. record 19.22 seconds in 50-yard freestyle in the meet at Indianapolis. He outraced Tom Jager of UCLA, who swam 19.24 last year but took 19.35 in a vain try for a third consecutive NCAA 50 title. Stanford leads, 105 points to Florida's 101 and UCLA's 98. COLLEGES

George Washington -- Mike Cohen resigned after five seasons as an assistant basketball coach to assist Wichita State's new coach, Eddie Fogler. Barry U. -- Miami school named Nick Creola basketball coach; his Webber College (NAIA) team was 28-2 this year, making his 15-year college record 390-79.
