Penn State and Virginia have scheduled a four-game football series, their first meetings in more than 30 years.
The Nittany Lions will travel to Charlottesville for the first game Sept. 10, 1988. The 1989 renewal will be at Penn State's Beaver Stadium Sept. 9. The 1990 and 1991 dates and sites are pending . . .
Dom Perno, who had become the focal point of widespread calls for a shakeup in the University of Connecticut's athletic program, resigned yesterday after nine seasons as basketball coach.
Perno, 44, compiled a 139-114 overall record, but his Huskies never made the NCAA tournament since the school joined the Big East seven years ago. The team has not had a winning record since 1981-82.
Perno leaves with 15 months left on his contract, with no replacement announced.
His troubles were compounded when Connecticut drew recruiting blanks during letter-of-intent week. The Huskies' prospective top recruit, Ivan Powell, a 6-foot-4 guard from Mattatuck Community College, opted for Maryland . . .
In the Colonial Athletic Association, Robert McPherson, who led Sam Houston State to a 27-6 mark this past season, is the new basketball coach at North Carolina-Wilmington.
McPherson, 44, was 102-47 for five seasons at Sam Houston; his Bearkats won the Gulf Star Conference this year and ranked fourth in the final NCAA Division II poll . . .
George Mason will host the four-team men's NCAA Eastern regional volleyball championships Friday and Saturday. Top-seeded Penn State will play Rutgers-Newark at 5:30 p.m. Friday, then No. 2 seed Mason will face East Stroudsburg at 8.
The title match, at 8 p.m. Saturday, is for a berth in the final four at Penn State, May 2-3.
