Mitch Webster drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning to score Dan Schatzeder and give Montreal a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs yesterday in the Expos' home opener.
Schatzeder, a reliever used as a pinch hitter for Jeff Reardon (1-0), led off the 11th with a walk against Lee Smith (0-2). He moved to second on Jody Davis' passed ball and to third when Hubie Brooks reached on first baseman Leon Durham's error.
Tim Wallach, who had tied the game with a three-run homer in the seventh, was intentionally walked. Webster took a 3-2 pitch outside to drive in the winning run.
*Astros 8, Giants 3: Phil Garner drove in Houston's first four runs with two homers and Glenn Davis hit a three-run homer as the Astros won San Francisco's home opener.
There were six homers in the game, including a two-run shot in the fifth inning from Giants rookie Will Clark, who singled off Bob Knepper (2-0) in his first two at-bats.
The Giants' Vida Blue, seeking his 200th major league win, trailed by 3-0 before retiring a batter.
*Padres 2, Dodgers 1: Garry Templeton hit a bases-loaded single with two outs in the 12th inning to give San Diego, playing at home, the victory over Los Angeles.
It was the ninth consecutive one-run game for both teams, extending their major league record for one-run games at the start of a season.
*Reds 5, Braves 3: Cincinnati's Dave Parker hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning and made a running catch of a drive to right field to end the game in Atlanta.
*Pirates-Phillies, ppd.: Pittsburgh's rained-out game in Philadelphia will be made up Aug. 15 as part of a twi-night doubleheader.
