Joan Benoit Samuelson teamed with Jeff Drenth of Eugene, Ore., to win the 10-mile road race in New York City's Central Park in combined 1 hour 41 minutes 7 seconds. Benoit led the women wire to wire; her 53:18 tied her U.S. record, beat the year-old meet record of 53:19 by Grete Waitz. Drenth, 23, was fourth among the men in 47:49, with Ibrahim Hussein, of Kenya and Albuquerque, first in 47:28. Former track great Jim Ryun dropped out with a pulled calf muscle after four miles in his first 10-mile road race. BOXING
