Jose Cruz drove in two runs with two singles and Kevin Bass had two hits and scored twice yesterday afternoon in Montreal, helping Bob Knepper and the Houston Astros beat the Montreal Expos, 6-3, in near-freezing weather.

Knepper (5-0) pitched six innings, allowing four hits and one run, striking out three.

Palmer (2-1) struck out nine, walked seven and allowed only two hits after the third inning. Palmer, who pitched a five-inning perfect game in April 1984, gained his first nine-inning complete game since June 27, 1982.
Steve Carlton (1-4) took the loss, giving up five runs in four innings.
*Mets 8, Reds 7: Keith Hernandez, Ray Knight and relief pitcher Roger McDowell drove in two runs apiece as New York struggled to victory in Cincinnati and handed the Reds their sixth straight loss.
Hernandez's two-run double keyed a three-run first that sparked the Mets' 12th victory in 13 games. The Reds have lost 10 of 11.
*Pirates 4, Padres 0: Rookie Mike Bielecki and two relievers combined on a four-hitter and Tony Pena's single touched off a four-run seventh inning to lead Pittsburgh in San Diego.
Bielecki (2-0), trying for his first major league complete game, was lifted after surrendering a leadoff single to Garry Templeton and a walk to John Kruk.
*Dodgers 3, Cardinals 2: Mike Marshall keyed a three-run third inning with a two-run homer in Los Angeles as the Dodgers won their sixth straight and St. Louis lost its fourth straight and 11th in 12.
Jerry Reuss (2-0) held St. Louis to a pair of third-inning infield hits until he was knocked out by three straight singles in the seventh.
*Cubs 6, Giants 5: Shawon Dunston's third of four hits in the game, a two-run double in the seventh inning, sent Chicago ahead and the Cubs rebounded from two consecutive shutout losses to win in San Francisco.
The Cubs broke a string of 23 scoreless innings when they scored a run in the fourth against Giants starter Juan Berenguer.
