Eight 3-year-old colts go postward in the $213,914 William E. Miller Memorial at Rosecroft tonight.
Although the big-name 2-year-old colts from last year are not eligible because their owners did not sustain entry payments, the Miller will feature colts who have shown promise of becoming the best of their age.
The favorites are likely to be Cash Asset, owned by the Wall Street Stable II, and Smartest Remark, owned by the Dreamaire Racing Corporation Number 1. They will race as a betting entry since Robert Boni is a part-owner of both stables.
Coming into the Miller, Cash Asset has won five races without a defeat this year. One month ago, Cash Asset won the Floridian at Pompano Park in 1:55 4/5 despite being on the outside most of the mile. Last week, Cash Asset, driven by Tommy Haughton, easily won his Miller elimination race in 1:58 2/5.
Smartest Remark won the other Miller elimination, also in 1:58 2/5. Driven by Don Irvine Jr., Smartest Remark won a division of Freestate's Potomac Stakes last year and went on to earn $360,571.
Neither Cash Asset nor Smartest Remark has good position, having drawn the six and seven posts, respectively.
Freight Saver has the No. 3 post. Driven by Ben Webster, Freight Saver finished third to Cash Asset last week but closed quickly by covering the final quarter-mile in a 28 seconds, making him a threat.
