Seattle Mariners -- Asked waivers on OF Al Cowens for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release; activated OF Phil Bradley and RHP Jim Beattie off disabled list; optioned RHP Karl Best to AAA Calgary.


Philadelphia Flyers -- Signed free agent D Ed Hospodar, who played with them in 1984-85 before being traded to Minnesota. Montreal Canadiens -- Signed D Gaston Gingras to a two-year contract with a one-year option.


Dallas Sidekicks -- A group wanting to buy the MISL team was given a 30-day deadline by the league's board of directors to finalize a deal with owner Donald Carter.


Jim Trueman, a member of the CART board of directors and owner of the car Bobby Rahal drove to victory in this year's Indianapolis 500, died in Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday of cancer. He was 51. Bob Ottum, a columnist for The Salt Lake Tribune and writer for Sports Illustrated, died in Salt Lake City Wednesday of cancer. He was 61.


Navy -- Named former 1B Jim Spencer, a 15-year veteran of the American League, assistant baseball coach. He served as a volunteer assistant for Coach Joe Duff in 1986. Alabama -- C Tim Butt of Sparrows Point, Md., has signed to play baseball for the Crimson Tide. Butt, a switch hitter, batted .344 last season at Community College of Baltimore. Yale -- Named Dick Kuchen (80-112 in seven seasons at California) head basketball coach.
