Second-year pro Cindy Rarick had a string of seven birdies on the first nine holes yesterday for a 4-under-par 68 and the opening-round lead by one shot over Kathy Baker and Sherri Turner in the Lady Keystone Open at Hershey (Pa.) Country Club.
Rarick, whose previous best LPGA tour finish was a tie for fifth, birdied the first hole, parred the next two, then birdied six straight to make the turn at 29, a course record by two strokes and one shot off the all-time LPGA record for nine holes. She double-bogeyed the 10th.
Provident Classic: Brad Faxon posted an 8-under-par 62 and took a one-shot lead at the halfway mark of the $300,000 Provident Classic at Valleybrook in Chattanooga, Tenn. Tommy Armour III also produced a record-tying 62, barely missing an 18th-hole putt to stand at 130 to Faxon's 129 for 36 holes.
Middle Atlantic PGA: Woody FitzHugh of Great Falls, Va., shot 67 at Cumberland (Md.) Country Club to win his first Middle Atlantic PGA pro-am this year. FitzHugh, MAPGA player of the year the past two years and winner of 16 tournaments last season, played his final nine in 32 to beat Bob Dolan of Chevy Chase, 68.
