Uptown Swell outlasted Palace Panther by a neck after both rallied yesterday in the $223,650 Bowling Green Handicap at New York's Belmont Park.
Ridden by Eddie Maple for owner Virginia Kraft Payson, the winner carried 114 pounds against 12 rivals over the 1 3/8-mile inner turf course in 2:14 4/5 and paid $13.20. The 4-year-old son of Master Derby earned $134,190, plus a $13,500 Breeders' Cup award. Uptown Swell's other stakes triumphs this year came in the Tropicana at Calder and the Dixie at Pimlico.
Laurel: Pot Of Antics, a 14-to-1 chance carrying a hot rider in Clarence Ladner, came from far back to win the $40,000-added Sensational Stakes by a length over Tulindas. Heavily favored Country Recital closed well for third, two lengths farther behind.
Pot Of Antics ran the seven furlongs in 1:24 3/5 and topped a 1-2 exacta worth $164.80.
Show Jumping: Katie Monahan of Middleburg, Va., riding Beanbag, beat out 45 competitors to win the $30,000 Ox Ridge Grand Prix in Darien, Conn.
Monahan, second on The Empress in the $30,000 Michelob Upperville (Va.) Jumper Classic the week before, completed the final round in 29.999 seconds. Monahan rode The Empress to third in 30.402. Beezie Patton of Middleburg, a student of Monahan, rode Trudeau to fourth place.
