Cherry Bowl officials announced they will pay money owed to Maryland and Syracuse, which participated in the 1985 game, by today. In giving conditional approval for the 1986 game, the NCAA ordered the sponsors to pay each school at least $400,000 owed for playing in the second Cherry Bowl in December at the Pontiac Silverdome.

The bowl actually is obligated to pay about $498,000 to the schools, and that money would be paid today via bank transfer, said Cherry Bowl coordinator Jack Allen.

Sponsors said before last year's game that the participating schools would be paid about $1 million each. But actual payments were far short of that and the NCAA ordered the Cherry Bowl to make up most of the difference . . .

The Sun Bowl will be renamed the John Hancock Sun Bowl and has been scheduled for Christmas afternoon through 1988. John Hancock Financial Services will invest $500,000 each year of the three-year contract and has two optional one-year renewals thereafter.

CBS Sports signed to broadcast the Sun Bowl for another three years . . .

Pitcher Drew Tanner of Navy heads local players named to the U.S. Senior Baseball team that will face clubs from 13 nations in four tournaments, July 1-Aug. 13. Coach Bob Bennett of Fresno State will lead the 20 collegiate players.

Also named to the team were outfielder Todd Azar and second baseman Wiley Lee of Old Dominion, first baseman Trey McCoy of Virginia Tech and shortstop Bill Narleski of Virginia.
