South Lakes' Christy Winters scored 20 points to lead the West to a 68-64 victory tonight over the East in the Virginia High School Coaches' All-Star girls basketball game at Liberty University.
In the boys game, J.R. Reid of Kempsville scored 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the East to a 76-73 victory over the West.
The West led by nine at halftime, but the East tied the game at 55 on a jump shot by Troy Wright of Menchville and took the lead for good on Reid's jumper with 6:23 left in the game.
The East led by nine points in the final period, but the West managed to cut it to one with 1:15 to play. Mount Vernon's Sean Andrews had 13 points for the West.
In the girls' game, the East closed to 63-62 on a three-point play by Gail Simms of William Monroe with 1:05 left. Winters hit the front end of a one-and-one to give the West a two-point lead, then Marlo Prince of King William missed a chance to tie the game with 29 seconds left.
Nancy Glass of Radford hit a layup with 14 seconds left to put the West ahead, 66-62, and Lisa Carter of Woodbridge (18 points) made two foul shots to clinch the victory.
Simms led the East with 16 points.
