The San Francisco 49ers waived defensive end Fred Dean, a four-time Pro Bowl selection.
Dean, 34, had refused the 49ers' request to retire. He had been the subject of trade talks with Los Angeles Raiders owner Al Davis, who watched Dean work out Wednesday at the Raiders' camp in Oxnard, Calif. Dean underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee a year ago . . .
J.D. Maarleveld, former all-America tackle from Maryland, has agreed to terms with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is expected to be in camp Friday, the club said. Contract terms were not disclosed.
Unhappy with the Bucs' original contract offer, Greg Marotta, Maarleveld's agent, said earlier this week he had ended negotiations with the team and advised Maarleveld to sign with the Baltimore Stars of the U.S. Football League. Tampa Bay Coach Leeman Bennett said he would start Maarleveld, a fifth-round draft choice, at left tackle . . .
The Baltimore Board of Estimates has approved a four-year lease for the U.S. Football League-champion Baltimore Stars to play at Memorial Stadium. The lease calls for the Stars to pay the city $400,000 a year in rent and $75,000 to fix up the old NFL Colts' training camp in Owing Mills.
