Jerome Lane scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half to help the unbeaten East team defeat the West, 96-89, in the U.S. Olympic Festival basketball tournament today.
The South team, led by Terry Dozier's 17 points and J.R. Reid's 14 points, beat the North, 98-84, in a night game.
In women's play, Maryland's Deanna Tate led a second-half rally that lifted the East to a 74-72 victory over the West. The South women beat the North, 74-71.
In rowing, Charlotte Hollings of Alexandria and Saiya Remmeler of Berkeley, Calif., won the gold medal in women's pair without coxswain. In the men's eight, John Hall of the Naval Academy and Steve Schmitt of Alexandria and the Potomac Boat Club were on the third-place North team.
Vickie Vogt, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., took her fourth and fifth gold medals as part of the record-setting South 800-meter relay team in 8:22.76 and by winning the 200-meter backstroke gold in 2:19.34. Mary Lou Ramm, of Chula Vista, Calif., pitched a no-hitter in the West's 9-0 victory over the South in women's softball.
