HOCKEY New Jersey Devils -- C Peter McNab, the 38th-leading goal scorer in NHL history, retired after 14 seasons in the league. McNab, 34, son of Devils (and former Capitals) General Manager Max McNab, scored 363 goals with 450 assists in 955 games with four teams. Detroit Red Wings -- Signed the Washington Capitals' fourth choice in the 1984 NHL entry draft, LW Kris King, to a three-year contract. King, 21, cleared waivers and joins the NHL club as a free agent after four years with Peterborough of the Ontario Hockey League.
BASEBALL Detroit Tigers -- Assigned RHP Nate Snell outright to AAA Toledo to make room for newly signed free agent 3B Bill Madlock. Cleveland Indians -- Signed RHP Sammy Stewart for AAA Buffalo. New York Mets -- Returned RHP Jeff Innis (0-1, 3.68) to AAA Tidewater, opening spot for RHP Dwight Gooden.
COLLEGES Providence -- Signed basketball coach Rick Pitino to a five-year contract. He had two years left on his original four-year deal, but after leading the Friars to the 1987 Final Four was approached about NBA jobs.
