Relief pitcher Dawn Billings of Eleanor Roosevelt walked home the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth and Severna Park went on to score nine more runs in the inning last night in Glen Burnie to win the Maryland AA girls softball championship, 12-10.
The Falcons erased a 6-0 deficit to win their first state championship. They had defeated Dulaney, Glen Burnie and Gaithersburg to reach the final.
The Raiders pitching failed them the last two innings to put the Falcons back into the game. Starter Monique Morrow began to lose control and allowed three walks and three hits as the Falcons cut the deficit to 6-3 in the fifth.
Morrow started the sixth inning by walking Severna Park center fielder Gina Candella. Morrow was lifted for Billings, but she was ineffective.
In total, the Raiders pitching walked in five runners during the sixth.
In other championship games, Paint Branch won the Class A title with a 2-1 victory over Chesapeake. Laura Murray hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Wendy Gill to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh.
In the Class B championship, Damascus scored two runs in the fourth to win, 2-0, over Northeast. Damascus won the title with only two hits. Losing pitcher Jennifer Grinath struck out 11 Damascus batters.
In the Class C championship, Smithburg of Washington County defeated Brooklyn Park, 6-5.
