Mats Wilander, the world's third-ranked player, was upset, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, by West Germany's Eric Jelen in the first round of the $300,000 Stella Artois tennis championships at the Queens Club in London.

Wilander, who lost to Ivan Lendl in the final of the French Open Sunday, became the third seeded player to be eliminated in this pre-Wimbledon grass-court tournament. Tuesday, the losers included Yannick Noah and Slobodan Zivojinovic.

But veteran American Jimmy Connors, a three-time winner of this event, beat Danie Visser of South Africa, 6-3, 6-4, and Sweden's Stefan Edberg, the No. 2 seed, became the first player to reach the third round with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Kelly Evernden of New Zealand. Edberg saved four set points in the first-set tie breaker . . .

John McEnroe withdrew from a grass-court tournament in Edinburgh, Scotland, with organizers reporting he has a leg injury. A spokesman also said two other seeded Americans, Aaron Krickstein and Zina Garrison, have pulled out.

Garrison has a leg injury that forced her to miss the recent French Open. Her status for Wimbledon, which begins June 22, is doubtful, organizers said. Krickstein reportedly has decided to drop all grass court tournaments from his schedule.
