Recommendations included Al Bumbry, Cookie Rojas and Dave Nelson. Boston Red Sox -- Activated 1B Bill Buckner from the disabled list; optioned SS Glenn Hoffman (.200 in 21 games) to AAA Pawtucket. Buckner bruised his right hip in a June 8 collision with Jim Dwyer of the Orioles. Chicago White Sox -- Optioned IF Tim Hulett (.219, 7 homers, 28 RBI) to AAA Hawaii; promoted OF Steve Lyons. Houston Astros -- Acquired LHP Jeff Edwards from Los Angeles and sent him to AAA Tucson; the move completed a trade that sent IF Phil Garner to Dodgers.
FOOTBALL San Francisco 49ers -- Gave G John Ayers his unconditional release. Ayers, a 10-year-veteran, started 14 games last season but had problems with his left knee.
HOCKEY Phil delphia Flyers -- C Tim Kerr (58 goals last season) underwent surgery on his left shoulder for the second time in two weeks; he is expected to be fully recovered by the start of next season. New York Islanders -- Signed D Steve Konroyd to a multiyear contract.
