BALTIMORE, JULY 6 -- Prince Rio, ridden by the nation's leading jockey, apprentice Kent Desormeaux, squeezed between horses late in the stretch to win the $16,500 Sailor's Guide Purse at Pimlico today.
Prince Rio, trained by King T. Leatherbury, won his second consecutive turf race by completing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44. Ringing, the leader most of the way, finished a length behind and Spring Laureate, the favorite, was another half-length back in third.
In a battle for fourth, Cherry Hill edged First Double by a neck, with Kalli, who rallied from next to last, another head back. Prince Rio paid $12.40 to win and the 6-11 exacta returned $101.20.
Jeff Lukas, son of North America's leading trainer Wayne Lukas, notified Pimlico officials that the stable would be represented in both of Pimlico's stakes races this weekend.
Without Feathers and Oh So Precious are candidates for Saturday's Summer Guest Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, and High Brite, winner of the recent Governor's Cup Handicap, is expected to return for Sunday's Survivor Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles.
