This week, the participants in the 28th Bobby Gorin Memorial junior golf tournament at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville have battled the weather as well as themselves.
Monday, it was a torrential rain during the qualifying round; Tuesday, it was oppressive heat. And just as Tuesday's first round winners found the clubhouse, they had to return to Woodmont's 18-hole oven for the second round.
Damon Drandakis got the best of Don Meadows of Haymarket, Va., the low qualifier on Monday with a 72.
In a close match throughout, Drandakis, from Elkton, Md., birdied the par-5 18th to advance to today's quarterfinals.
Among the others advancing were Herndon's Brian Quackenbush, the Virginia state champion from International, and Severna Park's Alan Myers, the Maryland state champion from Chartwell. Quackenbush easily handled Tom Gimer, 4 and 3, and Chris Reeves, 7 and 5. Myers bested Todd Casey, 5 and 4, and Shane Patterson, 3 and 2.
Gaithersburg's Jeff Meihe, who placed second in the qualifying round with a 75, lost to Fort Washington's Chris Coulther, 4 and 2.
Ted Donatelli played the most golf Tuesday -- 38 holes. Behind three holes, he came back and birdied the 18th hole to tie Chris Slavish, and then won on the 20th in the first round. Then he turned around and birdied the 18th to beat John Sovero in the second round.
