COURSE DESCRIPTION: 1: A drive into the fairway is essential, but the landing area is only about 11 yards wide. 2: A birdie opportunity, this hole can be driven. A big concern is the out of bounds over the wall on the left side. 3: Played down the prevailing wind, this hole is an iron from the tee. Into the wind, it's a strong par 4 with the green tucked behind two sandhills. 4: Like all of Muirfield's short holes, this one, with its elevated green, is superbly bunkered, particularly in front. 5: This is a birdie opportunity either with or against the wind. Fairway bunkers on the right are hidden from sight on the tee. 6: A tee shot to the right side of the fairway is essential for an approach shot close to the pin. 7: Similar in design to the fourth hole, this one runs into the prevailing wind. The elevated green is heavily bunkered. 8: The second shot is partially blind over cross-bunkers. The tee shot must avoid the bunkers clustered on the right. 9: The wind dictates play on this hole. Straight into the wind, it's a solid drive and second shot to set up a pitch and putt for birdie. Downwind, it can be reached in two. 10: In true links golf tradition, the second shot can be played short and bounced onto the green. 11: This hole has the only blind tee shot on the course. The green is full of subtle swales and hollows. 12: Into the west wind, this is a demanding tee shot. A well-played approach shot to the heavily bunkered green is crucial. 13: It's uphill to a long, narrow green with deep penal bunkers on both sides. 14: If the prevailing west wind blows, bogeys are common on this hole. Four 4s at this hole would represent great tournament golf. 15: An extra 25 yards have been added to this hole. The fairway must be found from the tee. 16: The left side of the green must be treated with caution because the slope of the terrain pulls the ball toward bunkers. 17: An excellent birdie opportunity, this hole can be played with a 3-iron off the tee and a 5-iron to the green. 18: Played straight-on and with a rolling fairway, this is one of golf's great finishing holes.
