OBITUARY Joseph Burns, 98, believed the oldest former major league ballplayer, died in Beverly, Mass., July 12. He played one game with Cincinnati in 1910, four with Detroit in 1913.

COLLEGES George Washington -- Women's basketball assistants Cheryl Getz and Sharon Allen resigned, Getz to be head coach at Eastern Michigan, Allen to assist at Drake. St. Francis (Pa.) -- Signed 6-foot-6 basketball F Joe Anderson of T.C. Williams.

PISTOL National Championships -- Mitchell Reed of Quantico, Va., placed second to champion Erich Buljung of Fort Benning, Ga., for the individual title at Camp Perry, Ohio, based on scores in .22 and .45 caliber and center fire. Ricardo Rodriguez of Stafford, Va., won the President's trophy in military service pistol.
