OBITUARY Travis Jackson, who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 by the Veterans Committee, died Monday night at his home in Aldo, Ark. Jackson, 84, played shortstop on John McGraw's great New York Giants teams of the 1920s and 1930s. He broke into organized ball with the 1921-22 Little Rock Travelers and played for the Giants from 1922 through 1936, compiling a lifetime batting average of .291. He also was an excellent defensive player.

New York Yankees -- Sent DH Ron Kittle, currently on 15-day DL, to AAA Columbus for three-day rehabilitation assignment. Seattle Mariners -- Sent LHP Stan Clarke to AAA Calgary; recalled LHP Dennis Powell. San Francisco Giants -- Optioned IF Mark Wasinger to AAA Phoenix; recalled P Jon Perlman from Phoenix.
BASKETBALL Boston Celtics -- Head trainer Ray Melchiorre, 48, resigned after seven seasons for what he termed personal reasons.
HOCKEY Winnipeg Jets -- Signed veteran D Jim Kyte to multiyear contract.
COLLEGES Temple -- Named Joe Famille, a Temple football player in the 1960s, as an offensive line coach. Duke -- Named Steve Traylor, head baseball coach at Florida Atlantic the past seven seasons, as baseball coach. Traylor, 36, replaces Larry Smith, who resigned last month.
