ST. MELLION, ENGLAND, JULY 30 -- Sally Little shot a 4-under-par 69 today for a four-shot lead over U.S. Open champion Laura Davies and Britain's Penny Grace-Whittaker after the first round of the British Women's Open golf championship.

Little, who started on the back nine, recovered from a double bogey on the 11th hole to finish with eight birdies on her last 14 holes, including three straight at the end of the round.

Davies won the U.S. Women's Open in a playoff Tuesday and had no time to practice before beginning defense of her British title.

Six players, including Americans Jane Blalock and Peggy Conley, were next at 74.

Columbia Savings LPGA Pro-Am:

Chris Johnson shot a 6-under 66 in the opening round at Meridian Golf Club in Englewood, Colo. Johnson overcame the early lead of Jill Briles, who finished her round of 68 with an eagle.

Federal Express St. Jude Classic:

Russ Cochran, needing a victory to qualify for next week's PGA Championship, fired a 6-under-par 66 to claim a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the $600,000 men's event in Cordova, Tenn.

Cochran birdied three of the final six holes.
