Sarah LeBrun of Owings Mills, who recently won her second straight Maryland Women's Amateur title, shot 73 yesterday at Columbia Country Club and led nine qualifiers for the upcoming U.S. Women's Amateur. The Women's Amateur is Aug. 17-22 in Barrington, R.I.
Susan Slaughter of Blacksburg, Va., and Donna Andrews of Lynchburg, Va., were second at 74, followed at 75 by Vickie Moran of Fairmont, W.Va., and Jennifer Kreps of Norfolk.
Carolyn McKenzie of Paoli, Pa., qualified with 77, followed by Marian Sison of Arlington, 78; Tina Barrett of Baltimore, 79, and Janice Albert of Lafayette Hills, Pa., 80. Brenda Seymour of Chantilly lost out to Albert in a six-hole playoff for the final spot.
WMGA Junior Open:
Jon Hurst of Woodbridge and Rick Elmendorf of Springfield, finalists in this event last year, each won two matches and will meet in one of this morning's semifinals at Chantilly National.
Hurst, runner-up for area junior-of-the-year honors last year, defeated Ted Sidey of Potomac in 19 holes in a first-round match, then eliminated Chris Reeves of Alexandria, 3 and 2. Elmendorf beat Jeff Corbett of Centreville, 6 and 5, then ousted Chris Cicolini of Bowie, 4 and 3.
Don Meadows of Haymarket will play Hunter Albright of Great Falls in the other semifinal. The final follows this afternoon.
Lillian Payne Invitational:
Sheila Dagucon of Montgomery Country Club shot 73 for a 36-hole total of 151 and a six-stroke victory in the women's tournament at Congressional Country Club.
Sue Schilling of Woodlawn was second at 76-157, followed at 158 by first-round leader Arlene English (82 yesterday), Marie Wenks of Boonsboro (76) and Jane Mason of Nasswango (78).
