CARLISLE, PA., AUG. 10 -- Running back Kelvin Bryant became the latest member of the Washington Redskins to be injured when he strained his right thigh reaching for a low pass this morning.

Bryant did not participate in contact drills today but said he expects to be able to play in the team's first preseason game Friday at 8 p.m. against the Pittsburgh Steelers at RFK Stadium.

"I don't think this is something that's going to hold me back too long," said Bryant, who has been hurt each of his college and professional seasons. He missed large portions of seasons at North Carolina and last season with the Redskins.

"He's going to have to be able to overcome these things," said Coach Joe Gibbs.

Running back George Rogers, who has a sprained left big toe, is not likely to play Friday, Gibbs said. Rogers ran briefly on his own this morning before stopping due to the injury.

Veteran Keith Griffin and rookie Timmy Smith are expected to see more practice time than usual because of the injuries.

Injuries also are keeping the team's top two draft choices out of practices. Cornerback Brian Davis is out with a strained thigh muscle in his right leg and offensive tackle Wally Kleine has a swelled right knee. Kleine likely will miss practice most of the week.

Three other offensive linemen are hurt. Guard R.C. Thielemann strained the triceps in his right arm and missed afternoon contact drills, rookie tackle Ed Simmons has a bruised left knee and missed the full day of practice, and free-agent tackle Mark Carlson sprained his jaw.

Jeff Bostic, demoted to second-team center last week, replaced Thielemann at right guard. Tackle Mark May, who sprained his right knee a week ago, returned to practice.

Linebackers Anthony Copeland (sprained left knee ligament) and Kurt Gouveia (broken blood vessel in forehead) did not take part in contact drills.

"We've got a bunch of nagging injuries . . . so that's going to impede progress," Gibbs said.

The team's kicking competition has begun. Incumbent Jess Atkinson made nine of 13 field goal attempts this afternoon, Max Zendejas made eight of 11 and free agent Andre Guardi made nine of 12.

The Redskins waived receiver Keiron Bigby of Brown and running back Ricky Jemison of Arkansas State. The team re-signed linebacker Tony Settles of Elon, who was waived nearly a week ago.
