Virginia Tech's board of visitors has approved the contract of new football coach Frank Beamer, nearly nine months after he began work and one day before fall practice. He will have a base annual salary of $90,000 for four years.
In separate actions, the board set a timetable for hiring an athletic director -- applications to close Oct. 1 -- and received proposed revisions to the contract of basketball coach Charles Moir.
"It was discussed in executive session and no comment was made public," a spokesman said of the situation with Moir, who has two years remaining on a five-year deal he signed in 1984. Tech refused to exercise a rollover clause in the pact before a July 1 deadline.
Beamer's contract provides him use of two automobiles, memberships in two clubs and bonus pay if his team makes postseason play. And the Virginia Tech Athletic Association is guaranteeing he will receive at least $50,000 in TV-radio fees his first year . . .
