FATALITY Tim Skitt, 19, a sophomore pole vaulter at Eastern Oklahoma State, was hit twice by cars and killed as he walked a highway near McAlester early Sunday. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said it was a hit-and-run accident, with no leads. Joe Dial, a world-class pole vaulter, had been Skitt's legal guardian since 1984. Dial said Skitt, a former state champion, was walking from his date's home to his car.
COLLEGES Purdue -- Ruled Ronnie Beeks, a senior slated as starting strong safety in varsity football, academically ineligible for 1987 season. Brigham Young -- Reported senior RB Tom Tuipulotu, a 1985 standout expected to be BYU's top rusher this fall had he recovered from knee surgery that sidelined him for 1986, insufficiently recovered to play football this year.
