Veteran Portland Trail Blazers power forward Kenny Carr, a graduate of DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, announced his retirement from pro basketball yesterday.

Carr, 32, played five NBA seasons with Portland but was hampered by injuries in each of the past three years. Back problems limited Carr to 49 games last season, and the 6-foot-7 forward averaged 10.8 points and 10.2 rebounds.

Carr said he suffered a herniated disk while lunging for a loose ball in a game against the Golden State Warriors on Jan. 18. "The knee injuries were a piece of cake compared to this," Carr said. "This {back injury} will be an ongoing thing for years to come." . . .

The NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers will highlight the Washington Bullets' preseason schedule.

The Lakers will play at Capital Centre Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. The Bullets will be the home team in four other preseason games: Oct. 24 against the New York Knicks at Richmond Coliseum at 7:30; Oct. 30, Atlanta Hawks at Baltimore Arena at 8; Nov. 2, Cleveland Cavaliers at George Mason's Patriot Center at 8, and Oct. 21, Utah at the Cajun Dome in Lafayette, La., at 7:30.
