Cardozo handed Anacostia its third loss of the young season last night with a 12-0 victory over the Indians in the first half of an Interhigh nonleague doubleheader at Eastern.

In the second game, Eastern defeated Theodore Roosevelt, 18-12.

The doubleheader was dedicated to the memory of former Eastern coach Earl Richards, who died of a heart attack this week. The event also marked the opening of Eastern's refurbished stadium.

Cardozo (1-0) scored its initial touchdown in the second quarter on a 46-yard pass from Allen Johnson to receiver Mike Okoro on first down.

"It was a sprintout play and I was looking for the flanker to come across the middle," said Johnson. "Instead, I checked off and looked for the split end."

The Clerks scored again early in the fourth quarter when defensive back Jerry Bellamy intercepted an Anthony Butler pass and returned it to the Indians 4. "I read the tight end and just cut in front of him," said Bellamy, about the interception."

On the first play from scrimmage, Rendell McCree went up the middle for the 12-0 score.

Anacostia had one chance to score late in the fourth quarter. A pass from Butler to wide receiver Michael Mack advanced Anacostia to the Cardozo 41. But on the next two plays a heavy pass rush, led by linebacker Maurice Williams, helped slow Anacostia's momentum.

Then, on fourth and 15 at the Clerks 37, defensive back Jerome Crawford broke up a Butler pass to give Cardozo possession. The Clerks ran out the remaining 1:30. Williams finished with 12 unassisted tackles, four assists and three sacks.

In the second game, flanker Rene Canty caught a two-yard slant pass from Reginald Robinson with seven minutes remaining to break a 12-12 tie and give Eastern the victory.

Linebacker Steve Scott of Eastern intercepted a Gregory Clark pass and returned it to the Rough Riders 20. Irving Jenkins, on the first possession after the interception, went through a huge hole to the 5. An encroachment penalty then moved the ball to the 2 before Robinson found Canty in the end zone for the winning score. Cardozo (1-0) 0 6 0 6 12 Anacostia (0-3) 0 0 0 0 0
