DuVal scored on its first two possessions of the second half, including a 49-yard pass from Isaac Johnson to Nolan Fields, to defeat Bladensburg, 14-0, in a Prince George's Class A game yesterday at Bladensburg.
The Tigers improved to 2-0, Bladensburg fell to 1-1.
After a scoreless first half, DuVal moved 65 yards in six plays to begin the second half.
With DuVal's Henry Brady (15 carries for 26 yards) stifled by Bladensburg, the Tigers went to the passing game. From the Bladensburg 49 on third and 10, Johnson found Fields behind two defenders on the right sideline for the score. Johnson passed to Brady for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 DuVal lead.
"We were throwing inside to see what their linebackers were going to do," said Johnson, who completed seven of 11 passes for 102 yards. "They came in to blitz and we just sent Fields downfield. He didn't even know the ball was coming. He just looked up and caught it. That was the game-buster right there."
Bladensburg quarterback Steve Meyer fumbled at his own 4-yard line on the next possession, and DuVal's Ed Gregory recovered. After a holding penalty put the ball back at the 15, Brady scored on the next play on a right-side sweep with 29 seconds left in the third period. The conversion pass failed.
Bladensburg's best offense was generated by running back Tony Kennedy (16 carries, 72 yards). The Mustangs had little success passing. DuVal (2-0) 0 0 14 0 14 Bladensburg (1-1) 0 0 0 0 0
