Quarterback Joey Emberson ran for one touchdown and passed for another yesterday as Einstein defeated Magruder, 23-7, ending the Colonels' 13-game winning streak in a Montgomery nonleague game at Einstein.

The Titans (2-0) built a 13-0 halftime lead. Ninth-ranked Magruder (1-1) was 12-0 last year when it won the Class A state title. Last week, Einstein defeated defending Class AA state champion Gaithersburg, 11-0.

"This was a great win for us," said Emberson, who completed five of eight passes for 88 yards. "I have a feeling this is going to be a very good year."

The Titans, who moved up from Class A to AA this year, controlled the first half, giving up only 27 total yards and one first down.

After Ivan Charles recovered a Magruder fumble to end the first quarter, Emberson hit Eddie Gagain (three catches, 64 yards) in the back of the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown.

"We just put that play in. Eddie went on the fly and I found him," Emberson said.

Emberson made it 13-0 on the Titans' next possession, sneaking up the middle from four yards. The 10-play, 52-yard drive included a 20-yard pass from Emberson to Kevin Carbonaro on third and 12 from the Einstein 46.

The Colonels got back in the game after Steve Sporer recovered Kevin Martin's fumble at the Titans 36. Twelve plays later, quarterback Charles Devereaux snuck in from the 1. Jeff Flach's kick made it 13-7.

However, Nicholas Coggins kicked a 32-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter and Charles made a one-handed interception and returned it 68 yards for a touchdown with 2:32 left.

"That's a pretty tough team," Magruder end Greg Oseneek said. "We had a chance to get back in the game, but we didn't get everything going at the same time."

Einstein running back Tim Edwards carried 14 times for 69 yards. Devereaux completed three of nine passes for 46 yards as the Colonels managed only six first downs and 110 total yards. Magruder (1-1) 0 0 7 0 7 Einstein (2-0) 0 13 0 10 23
