TAMPA, FLA., SEPT. 13 -- Quarterback Steve DeBerg threw a club-record five touchdown passes today to lift the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 48-10 rout of the Atlanta Falcons, giving Ray Perkins a successful return as an NFL coach.

"The single biggest difference in this game today was Coach Perkins," said DeBerg, an 11-year veteran who underwent a rigorous offseason conditioning program in his attempt to hold off Vinny Testaverde, the 1986 Heisman Trophy winner and first pick in the NFL draft. "Perkins had a fantastic game plan."

Marion Campbell, beginning his second stint as Atlanta coach after a 10-year absence, winced from the sidelines as the Falcons were beaten badly by a team coming off consecutive 2-14 seasons. In setting a club scoring record, the Buccaneers inflicted the worst beating on Atlanta since a 59-0 loss to the Rams in 1976, Campbell's next-to-last game as coach.

Perkins, who left the New York Giants following the 1982 season to become head coach at the University of Alabama, saw DeBerg play a flawless first half one week after he picked the 11-year veteran to start ahead of Testaverde, who did not play. Atlanta 0 3 0 7 10 Tampa Bay 14 13 7 14 48
