Sixth-ranked Carroll scored on its first five possessions en route to a 36-0 victory against Anacostia in the finale of a Metro Conference-Interhigh League doubleheader yesterday at Carroll.

Unbeaten Gonzaga used two quarterbacks, relying on the option prowess of Tom O'Keefe and the deft passing touch of Greg Lilly to edge Cardozo, 16-14, in the first game.

Carroll relied on a powerful rushing attack led by Richard Dickens (six carries for 76 yards, two touchdowns) and Louis Johnson (six carries for 57 yards, two touchdowns). They played only 1 1/2 quarters, but left the game with the Lions ahead, 29-0, midway through the second period.

For the game, Carroll gained 485 yards total offense, including 251 yards rushing.

Anacostia drove into Carroll territory only twice, never deeper than the 30-yard line. Lawrence Moten and Milton Grant intercepted passes for Carroll, which limited quarterbacks Anthony Butler and Randell Stroman to 16 completions in 39 attempts.

The outcome of the first game was not decided until Gonzaga ran out the clock, denying Cardozo the ball for the last 5:06 of the game.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Gonzaga led, 16-6, but linebacker Maurice Williams' fumble recovery on the Eagles 18 gave Cardozo new life. Clerks quarterback Allen Johnson threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jerome Crawford on first down. The Johnson-to-Crawford combination also worked for a two-point conversion to cut Gonzaga's lead to 16-14.

Taking over on their 20-yard line, the Eagles were on the ropes, but Gonzaga rushed for four first downs to kill Cardozo's upset hopes.

Gonzaga fullback Chris Brown rushed for 125 yards, including 89 in the second half, and scored on a 33-yard touchdown run midway through the third period that provided the final victory margin.

The Eagles led, 9-6, at halftime, thanks to a 15-yard touchdown pass from Lilly to Rob Thompson and a 41-yard field goal by Rob Smith.
