Host High Point took an early lead, then had to hold off a Crossland comeback effort in the final period to win, 14-6, in a Prince George's AA League game last night.
Following a scoreless and uneventful first quarter, the Eagles (2-2) solved Crossland's defense. High Point mounted a run-oriented 14-play drive early in the second quarter, only to watch Crossland defensive back Bruce Guinn intercept a Donald Moyer pass in the end zone.
Taking over after a Crossland punt, however, the Eagles struck suddenly. Running back Don Johnson, who was lined up as a wingback on the right side, took an inside handoff and carried left on a reverse, breaking through a gaping hole at the line of scrimmage. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound junior dodged a pair of Crossland defenders downfield and broke into the clear for a 74-yard touchdown. Moyer added the extra point to give High Point a 7-0 lead.
High Point was presented with another excellent scoring opportunity late in the second quarter after a Crossland miscue, but failed to convert. A snap went over the head of Crossland punter Corey Dyson, who picked up the loose ball and was tackled at his 35. The Eagles ultimately pushed the ball down to the Crossland 2, but Moyer was stopped short of the goal line on a quarterback sneak as time expired in the half.
The Crossland players celebrated their defensive stand as the half ended, and rode that momentum to a 25-play drive that took up much of the third quarter and part of the fourth. The drive culminated with a two-yard scoring toss from Robert Gorham to Rodney Crayton. The Cavaliers (1-3) fell victim to yet another high snap on the conversion attempt and still trailed, 7-6.
On the ensuing High Point possession, however, Crossland was the beneficiary of a High Point kicking gaffe when Moyer punted into the back of teammate Brian Brown, giving Crossland possession at the High Point 26.
Five players later, the Eagles' Charmin Heckstall stopped the Cavaliers drive by intercepting a Gorham pass and returning it 33 yards to the High Point 38.
The Eagles, behind the running of sophomore Brian Brown, quickly drove 62 yards. Mike Poole ran the final 13 yards for the touchdown that made the score 14-6. Crossland (1-3) 0 0 0 6 6 High Point (2-2) 0 7 0 7 14
