Derek Savoy's 10-yard touchdown run with 8:30 remaining last night gave eighth-ranked McNamara a wild, 20-14 victory over 12th-ranked Annandale in an intersectional football game at Annandale.

The Mustangs, members of the Metro Conference, remained unbeaten at 4-0, and the Atoms fell to 1-2.

Savoy's run on third and six capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive. Eleven of those plays were rushes by junior DeBraie Meekins, who, overall, ran 32 times for 105 yards and a touchdown.

The game had 14 penalties, a second-and-55 situation, a 95-yard kickoff return and a touchdown reception after a pass went off a defender's helmet.

With the game tied at 7 in the third quarter, Annandale was at its 39 and quarterback Shane Hines passed upfield. A McNamara defender had a chance for an interception, but the ball deflected off his helmet and into Ray Crittendon's hands. Crittendon went down the left sideline to score.

However, the momentum changed shortly afterward when McNamara sophomore Keith Thorton returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to tie it.

"I saw a huge hole and I went through it," Thorton said. "Only the kicker was left and Mark Williams took him out."

The Atoms had a chance to go ahead on their next possession, but they were unable to move the ball from McNamara's 16. Crittendon ended the drive by missing a 33-yard field goal.

The Mustangs then controlled the ball for more than six minutes for the tie-breaking score.

"That's a very good football team," Annandale Coach Bob Hardage said. "The kickoff put them back in the game. It was a great run."

The Mustangs needed just two minutes to score in the first quarter. On their first play from scrimmage, Chris Auth pitched to David Pierce, who threw crossfield back to Auth. The Mustangs' senior quarterback found Russell Jones wide open for a 55-yard gain to Annandale's 14. Three plays later, Meekins ran two yards for the touchdown.McNamara (4-0) 7 0 7 6 20 Annandale (1-2) 0 7 7 0 14
