Top-ranked North Carolina defeated No. 15 Rutgers, 3-0, and second-ranked Massachusetts topped No. 13 George Mason, 1-0, in the first round of the Lady Patriot Invitational women's soccer tournament at George Mason.
The Patriots (1-4) were outshot, 15-5. Cathy Spence scored the only goal at the 62:57 mark on a six-yard shot that beat Mason goalkeeper Yvonne Morris.
The Tar Heels (7-0) have won five of the last six NCAA titles and will play Massachusetts (7-0) today at 9 a.m. George Mason meets Rutgers (4-1) at 11:30.
In men's action, Robert Morris (6-1) got goals from freshman Shelley Noel and senior Tony Bunbury and shut out Georgetown (3-5), 2-0, at Georgetown.
Bruce Simonson scored two first-half goals and led American (4-3-1) to a 2-0 victory over East Carolina (1-7) at AU. Freshman Robert Majdiak started his first game in goal for AU and needed to make only two saves.

Bob Kempainen was the individual winner in 25:34 and led Dartmouth to victory in the Maryland Invitational cross country meet in College Park. Maryland's Mark Coogan finished fifth in 25:45. Dartmouth won with 34 points.
