Bowie's Mike Young intercepted Tim Jacobs' pass with 35 seconds left in the game to preserve a 9-6 victory over host Eleanor Roosevelt in a Prince George's AA League game yesterday at Roosevelt.

Roosevelt, which cut Bowie's lead to 9-6 on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Jacobs to James Martin with 2:12 left in the game, began its final drive at its 33-yard line with 44 seconds left. After an incomplete pass on first down, Jacobs tried to hit Chucky Fox with a pass across the middle, but the ball bounced off Fox's hands to Young, and the Bulldogs (4-0 overall, 3-0 in league play) ran out the clock.

"We were in a 4-3-4 pro defense with the cornerbacks up," said Young, who also completed two of six passes for 50 yards at quarterback. "I saw him {Fox} cutting across the middle, it hit his hands and I just grabbed it."

At quarterback, Young had two carries for 16 yards in a nine-play, 55-yard drive that he capped off with a seven-yard touchdown run with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter for a 9-0 lead. The conversion kick failed. Earlier, Mark Fitzpatrick gave Bowie a 3-0 lead with a 39-yard field goal.

On the ensuing possession, Roosevelt (2-2, 2-2) drove 57 yards for its only score. Jacobs (four of 13, 60 yards) completed two of five passes in the drive, both to Martin, including the touchdown.

Although the Raiders rushed for 128 yards, they still tried to throw against Bowie's alternating three- and four-man zone defenses with little success. Roosevelt Coach John Marchetti said his team also ran inside too much.

"They {Bowie} gave us the weak side, but we couldn't take advantage of it," he said. "They were always stunting."

Bowie relied on a ground game that gained 146 yards, ran time off the clock and wore the quicker Raiders defense down. Most of the yards were gained by running backs Kevin Jackson, who carried 13 times for 51 yards, and Nick Arbutina (14-48).

"I had a lot confidence in our running game," said Arbutina. "I knew if we kept running at them, we were going to get something out of it." Bowie (4-0) 0 0 3 6 9 E. Roosevelt (2-2) 0 0 0 6 6
