Third-ranked DeMatha used a pass-oriented game plan to defeat Theodore Roosevelt, 55-18, yesterday in a nonleague game at St. John's.

After DeMatha (4-0) began its first possession with two running plays, Tracy Bergan completed three straight passes, the last one to tight end Jeffrey Gallman for a 32-yard touchdown.

On their next possession, the Stags scored when DeWayne Redd carried seven yards around right end for the touchdown. And then in the second quarter, DeMatha scored 27 points to lead by 48-6 at halftime.

The Stags used their height and weight advantage to pound the ball through Theodore Roosevelt's front line. DeMatha's front line averaged 35 more pounds per player than Roosevelt's.

"We had some great blocking on the offensive line," said Redd. "Some of those holes that our offensive line was opening were huge, and Derrick {Johnson} and I were able to pick up massive yardage."

Roosevelt scored on its first possession of the third quarter. Gary Clark found Kevin Dial for an eight-yard scoring pass to cap a nine-play drive and cut the margin to 48-12.

"I really don't know how good we are," said Roosevelt Coach James Tillerson, whose team is 0-3. "But DeMatha is a real good team. They're certainly the best team we've played this season." T. Roosevelt (0-3) 6 0 6 6 18 DeMatha (4-0) 21 27 7 0 55
