Pittsburgh Pirates -- Plan to mark the 15th anniversary of Roberto Clemente's 3,000th hit with a scoreboard tribute before tonight's game against the Chicago Cubs. Clemente, the Pirates' Hall of Fame right fielder, doubled to left field against the New York Mets' Jon Matlack on Sept. 30, 1972, for his 3,000th, and final, regular-season hit. Boston Red Sox -- Announced they will field a Class A Carolina League team in Lynchburg, Va., for 1988. The New York Mets previously had used Lynchburg as a farm team.

COLLEGES North Carolina State -- Wolfpack freshman QB Preston Poag, who led a 42-14 victory over Maryland Saturday, has been named Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the week. Indiana -- Said basketball F Kreigh Smith will be out indefinitely after surgery.

HOCKEY Hartford Whalers -- Said veteran RW Wayne Babych has decided to retire rather than play in the minor leagues. Babych, 29, was one of 18 players assigned to Binghamton of the American Hockey League as the Whalers brought their roster down to 25. New Jersey Devils -- Assigned G Craig Billington, RW Chris Cichocki and D Murray Brumwell to Utica of American Hockey League.

BASKETBALL New Jersey Nets -- Said former NBA players Jim Spanarkel and Tim Bassett (McKinley Tech) have been added to radio broadcast team.
