Following the blocking of fullback Phil Bryant and an offensive line that consistently pushed Good Counsel five yards off the line of scrimmage, DeMatha opened its Metro Conference title defense with a 46-0 victory last night at Good Counsel.
It was the 15th straight victory for the third-ranked Stags (5-0).
Dwayne Redd led DeMatha rushers with 108 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, but it didn't matter who carried the ball as long as Jeff Gallman, Orlando Lowe, Dan Edelen, Terrill Jones, Gary Steen and Mark Levock were up front and Bryant was the lead blocker. For the game, the Stags rushed for 279 yards.
"It was the first league game, the first step toward keeping our title," said Bryant, the defending 185-pound national prep wrestling champion. "All running backs like to carry the ball, and so do I. Fullbacks have to block a lot, so if that is how I can best help the team that is what I want to do."
DeMatha scored on its first possession when Redd's one-yard touchdown run capped a 10-play, 60-yard drive. Donald Moore's conversion kick put the Stags up, 7-0, with 7:34 left in the first period. DeMatha (5-0) 13 6 8 19 46 Good Counsel (1-4) 0 0 0 0 0
