Ninth-ranked Georgetown Prep won for the 16th straight time yesterday, but it wasn't easy.
The Little Hoyas took advantage of great field position in the first half and held on late in the game to defeat visiting Landon, 14-7, in an Interstate Athletic Conference game to extend the area's longest scholastic football winning streak.
Georgetown Prep (3-0, 1-0 in the IAC) hasn't lost since 1985. Landon fell to 2-1, 0-1.
The game was as close as the score indicated. With the exception of two mistakes, the Bears played the Little Hoyas evenly. Prep had a slight advantage in total yards (144-134) and first downs (8-7).
The Bears gave Prep great field position midway through the first quarter when Jim Mannino fumbled at Landon's 33. Seven plays later, Chris Roa dove across the right side of the line from the 1-yard line. Tripp Shreves kicked the extra point to give the Hoyas a 7-0 lead.
A 15-yard pass from Marc Richards to Brian Ridgway and Roa's four-yard gain on third and three from Landon's 16 were the keys to the short drive.
Deep in their own territory on their next possession, the Bears gave Prep great position again when the Hoyas' Rick Peete blocked a punt at the Bears' 18.
Green's four-yard run up the middle put the Hoyas ahead by 14-0 with 10:02 left in the first half. After a 15-yard penalty to start the drive, Brian Haley ran 15 yards to get the Hoyasinto scoring position. Landon (2-1) 0 0 7 0 7 Georgetown Prep (3-0) 7 7 0 0 14
